Biography
Jay Lee is a Malaysian dancer, performer, choreographer and movement artist based in Glasgow. He began his dance journey in Popping in 2013 and discovered Whacking in 2024, developing a strong focus on the style from 2025 onwards. His movement practice combines Whacking and Popping with influences from Hip Hop, House, Krump and other street dance forms.
Jay is particularly drawn to freestyle, musicality and expressive movement, using dance as a way to communicate character, emotion and identity. His practice is influenced by Whacking’s history and its roots in queer nightlife and self-expression, while his wider background in architecture has shaped his awareness of space, physicality and how the body interacts with its surroundings.
As a performer, Jay has appeared at Hidden Door Festival, Commonwealth-related programming and multidisciplinary projects including *Small Town Boys*. He has also performed and competed across the UK, Europe and Asia.
Jay brings a combination of musicality, individuality and a strong connection to street dance culture to his performance work. He is interested in working across dance, physical theatre, live performance and screen, and in exploring how movement can communicate stories and emotions beyond words.
